Finding focus of optical fibre

  • The focus of the optical fibre was found by taking a relative distance between the lens and the position of the optical fibre, and measuring the amplitude of a spectral line from the laser found at 3.5mm.

  • taken at 1mm intervals between 230m and 270mm.
  • Fit with hyperbolae as approximation
  • distance measured with ruler so very approximate i.e ±1mm
  • Best focus was found at 250mm±2mm
  • Iris was almost closed as the laser would saturate camera at shortest exposure.

  • also took more data as SBIG ST-7E was cooling.
  • Just need extra part to connect firewire camera, so that the alignment can be competed.
