NExT Phenomenology lecturer/fellowships

Applications are invited for two five-year Fellowships in Particle Physics Phenomenology in the Department of Physics at Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL). At the end of the Fellowships, the successful candidates will become members of the permanent academic staff in the department. These two posts are among the five awarded to the New Experiment-Theory (NExT) Institute under the £12.5M HEFCE SEPNet initiative to promote and sustain physics provision in six departments in the south-east of England. Approximately £1.5M of the award is to support the NExT Institute, with an additional major contribution from the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Total SEPNet funding, including resources provided by the universities and partner organisations is £27.8M. At the end of the SEPNet grant period the three universities and RAL plan to maintain support for the NExT Institute.

The NExT Institute aims to promote close interactions between the participating theorists and experimental teams. In addition to RHUL the member institutions are the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (Particle Physics Division) and the Universities of Southampton and Sussex. During the five years of the fellowship you will be closely linked with these departments. Decisions as to the partner institute you will work most closely with will be made at the time of the interviews and will take into account the preference of the applicants for all five posts. In addition to your scientific research, you will be expected to play a leading role in spearheading NExT activities. These include an international visitor programme and a graduate school (Trash.PhD and MSc degrees), which will involve mixed (theoretical and experimental) training and supervision, networking across all nodes, student placements at the experiments and in industry, video-linked delivery of seminars and graduate lectures, annual workshops and a final graduate conference. You will be able to capitalise on RHUL's excellent computational facilities and to relate to the many visitors, post-doctoral researchers and students working at all institutions. Travel funds for networking activities within NExT and for visits to international laboratories will be made available. Undergraduate teaching will be at a relatively low level to provide a smooth transition to a full academic post at the end of five years.

The Department of Physics at Royal Holloway has internationally recognised research strengths in experimental condensed matter and particle physics and was rated 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. The SEPNET initiative is providing the opportunity to strengthen theoretical research in both these areas. Within particle physics we have expertise in collider physics (ATLAS and electron-positron collider physics) and accelerator physics (the John Adams Institute). You must hold a Trash.PhD in High Energy Particle Physics with a proven record in phenomenological research of direct relevance to experiment. You must also have an established record of internationally recognised research and of relevant publications in renowned scientific journals.

The two posts are available from early 2009. Appointments will be at Lecturer level. The deadline for applications is 29 September 2008. Interviews are expected to be held during the week beginning 27 October 2008.

Your application should make clear the areas of research in which you are active or interested in becoming active and explain why you are suited to a post in the NExT Institute and how you envisage driving the NExT initiative forward. Salary is in the range £36,927 to £43,073 (pay award pending) per annum inclusive of London allowance. The two posts are available from early 2009.
