Oliver Edy, EC, DT, GD, DH, MS, STB, 18:45

  • Gained bearings outside the dome, identifying stars such as Vega and Polaris, as well as constellation like Cassiopeia.
  • Determined that, although the positions of the stars change in the sky, they are fixed with respect to each other. As such, we use a line across tghe sky to measure angles from.

  • Doors opened - butterfly clip and ropes used to hold doors closed.
  • 19:00, doors open, telescope still covered.
  • Remove watertight cover of telescope.
  • 12 inch telescope, LX200, made by Meade.
  • Remove covers from main scope and finder.
  • Pointed at celestial equator - 0 declination.
  • Telescope turned on.
  • Hand padel controls telescope.
  • 19:04 learned how to control telescope with remote.
  • Opened Stellarium.
  • 19:10, found Vega on Stellariunm, at +284 degrees azimuthally, +40 degrees altitude.
  • Lined up dome here.
  • 19:13, Right Ascension/Declination 18h37m/+38degrees47'
  • 19:23, Egham at 33 degrees, 47' . Sidereal time is 23 hrs, 35 minutes, 37.2 seconds
  • LST is 23hr35min, RA is 18h 37 min, alpha = LST-RA = 4 hr 58 mins
  • 19:29, poisitoned telescope to point at Vega
  • Telescope speed reduced, speed 5
  • Star centred in finder scope
  • 20:10 Using menu keys, synchronising telescope on Vega
  • Object -> Star -> Up and down arrows to Name -> Select Vega -> Alpha-Lyra
  • Press and hold enter for 2 seconds -> Scope knows where Vega is
  • Press and hold mode for 2 seconds -> Co-ordinates shown
  • ~20:30 Taken images of binary system Epsilon Lyra with different exposure times, in increments of 0.25 seconds, up to around saturation
  • 20:55 Taken images of binary system Epsilon Lyra with red, green and blue filters, each with individual exposure times appropriate for saturation
  • We looked at the Ring Nebula in the Lyra Constellation.
